Here we go!
This watch face puts the start of Super Mario Bros. 3's World 1-1 across your watch, pixel for pixel: the pale blue sky, the clouds with their little eyes, the striped green hills and bushes, the bolted pink and blue blocks with their shadows, the striped earth and the ? blocks. And every minute, Mario plays through it.
Small Mario walks in and punches a coin out of the lone ? block. He stomps a Goomba flat. He knocks a Super Mushroom out of the next block, and it slides off the end and into him, and he grows. Then a Super Leaf pops out of the last block and rocks from side to side down into his hands. A puff of smoke, and he is Raccoon Mario. He stamps a Koopa Troopa into its shell and kicks it away.
And then he flies. A run-up with the P meter full, and he takes off, climbing past the bolted blocks, turning in the sky and sweeping back over the ? blocks through a trail of coins. He floats down between the blocks on the beat of his tail, takes one more run, and flies up and away off the top of the screen. Then the level starts again.
The level follows the clock, not your wrist. Glance at your watch at any moment and Mario is wherever that second puts him, always in step with the time.
Every sprite is NES-style pixel art taken from the game itself: the raccoon tail beats as he flies and wags as he floats, the ? blocks and coins flash, the coin spins out of its block, and every number and letter is set in a blocky 8-bit type drawn pixel by pixel, outlined in black so it reads against the sky.
Everything you need at a glance:
• A big 8-bit digital clock, following your 12/24-hour setting
• Weekday and date
• Battery level, counted the way the game counts coins
• Today's steps beside Mario's boot
• Your heart rate beside a 1-UP mushroom
• An orange step goal ring around the edge, the colour of the coins, filling as you walk
Make it yours: press and hold the watch face, tap Customize, and switch the step goal ring off if you prefer a clean edge. It is on to begin with.
In always-on mode the level steps aside and only a dim clock stays lit, gently shifting position to protect your screen.
