About this ebook

In the quiet town of Oakhaven, where the past lingers in every weathered brick and overgrown garden path, Elias Thorne returns after fifteen years of running. His mother's death has drawn him back to a place he swore he'd never see again—a place where memories wait like patient predators, where every street corner holds a ghost, and where the person he must finally face is the one he's spent his entire life avoiding: himself.

A Battle of One's Own is a luminous literary novel that traces the contours of regret, the weight of unspoken words, and the fierce, fragile courage it takes to stop fleeing and begin feeling. Through prose that shimmers with precision and emotional depth, Jaskolski crafts an unforgettable portrait of a man at the crossroads of his own making—a man who must learn that the hardest battle any of us will ever fight is the one waged in the silent chambers of our own hearts.

With echoes of Kazuo Ishiguro's restraint and the emotional intensity of Sally Rooney's interiority, this novel speaks to anyone who has ever wondered: What if I had stayed? What if I had spoken? What if the life I'm living is the one I was too afraid to refuse?

Beautiful, haunting, and ultimately redemptive, A Battle of One's Own is a meditation on the stories we tell ourselves to survive—and the truth we must eventually tell to live.

About the author

Jaskolski is a writer of literary fiction whose work explores the interior lives of ordinary people navigating extraordinary emotional landscapes. With a career spanning over fifteen years, Jaskolski has published novels, short stories, and essays that have been praised for their psychological depth, lyrical prose, and unflinching honesty.

Born and raised in a small town not unlike Oakhaven, Jaskolski has spent much of his adult life living in cities—London, Berlin, Prague—working as a translator, a teacher, and a freelance writer before dedicating himself fully to fiction. His work is informed by a deep interest in the ways people communicate and fail to communicate, the stories they tell themselves to survive, and the truth they must eventually tell to live.

A Battle of One's Own is Jaskolski's latest novel, following several critically acclaimed works that have explored themes of identity, loss, family, and the quiet courage it takes to face oneself. His writing has been compared to that of Kazuo Ishiguro, Alice Munro, and Julian Barnes, and his work has appeared in numerous literary journals and anthologies.

Jaskolski lives in London, where he is currently at work on his next novel. He can be reached through his publisher or, more reliably, by letter. He still believes in the power of the written word, the weight of the unspoken, and the wild, untamed garden that grows in the space between.
