He is watching, planning, waiting. This time he won't fail.

Family secrets, betrayal and vengeance bring a determined homicide detective and a grieving former street cop together to stop a killer in this atmospheric and emotionally charged murder mystery.

Detective Liz Moorland is hunting an escaped prisoner when she is diverted to the scene of a fatal crash on a lonely country road. She knew the deceased couple. The sole survivor is their eight-year-old daughter, Melanie, granddaughter of Liz's old colleague, retired police sergeant Vince Carter.

The crash is called a tragic accident. But when a threatening voicemail surfaces, Vince is convinced someone wanted them dead. He has Melanie to care for and a custody fight on his hands, but can't shake old suspicions about his son-in-law's past.

At a dead end with the fugitive case, Liz starts digging into Vince's theories. When she uncovers disturbing connections between the two cases, Liz attracts the attention of dangerous criminals who will stop at nothing to protect their growing empire.

The shadows around Melanie begin to close in. The little girl was not meant to survive that night.

And somewhere in the darkness, a killer is making plans to keep her silent.
